The Lost Sea Shepherd EP
A legendary lost project in the Gojira discography is the unfinished “Sea Shepherd EP”. Sea Shepherd’s Vessel and a Legal Battle
In 2010, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society acquired a vessel and named it the MV Gojira in honor of the band’s support for their activism.
Their music has not only captivated millions of fans but has also had a profound influence on the evolution of heavy metal.
With each subsequent release, the bandhas refined their sound while expanding their musical horizons. Joined by composer Victor le Masne and opera singer Marina Viotti, the band performed a metal version of the French revolutionary song “Ah!
The album displayed a more mature and refined sound, with a greater emphasis on melody and atmosphere alongside the technicality. Albums such as Magma and Fortitude have further cemented their standing as innovators in the metal genre.
With a discography that includes seminal albums like From Mars to Sirius and the Grammy-nominated Magma, Gojira has built a dedicated global following and continues to be one of the most innovative bands in metal.
A History of Gojira
Gojira, the French heavy metal force, has carved a unique path in the genre.
The album explored themes of human nature, societal collapse, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world. The band's performance represented the metal community as a whole and showed that metal can bring it as much (if not more) than mainstream artists at huge cultural and sporting events.
A DIY Odyssey: The Recording of Terra Incognita
After years of honing their sound and releasing demos under the name Godzilla, the band decided to record their debut album, Terra Incognita. Amongst their musical success, Gojira is also known for being an avid supporter of environmental rights.
After Gojira’s bassist Jean-Michel Labadie was unavailable, Joe Duplantier was asked to join. "Amazonia" even earned the band its 3rd Grammy nomination this time for "Best Metal Performance".
Modern Day Gojira
Gojira is officially considered one of France's most successful bands and is the only French band to land #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock chart.
The album’s lyrical themes also expanded, delving deeper into environmental consciousness and philosophical introspection.
By 2008 Gojira had signed with Prosthetic Records which helped them achieve exposure in North America, particularly with their next album "The way of all flesh" which made its way onto the Billboard 200 Charts.
Their sound leaned heavily on technical death metal, characterized by complex riffs, blast beats, and Joe’s guttural vocals.
The band released four demos under the Godzilla moniker, honing their skills and building a small but dedicated following in the French underground metal scene.

Breaking Through: From Mars to Sirius and Global Recognition (2005-2012)
Gojira’s breakthrough came in 2005 with the release of “From Mars to Sirius.” This critically acclaimed album marked a significant evolution in their sound.
Originally named Godzilla, the band’s career is marked by unique achievements, from their groundbreaking environmental activism to their recent historic performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
